# Type: String

Checks whether the incoming value is text. Use this wherever a step needs to confirm a value is a piece of text before acting on it, for example to make sure a product name or description is filled in as text rather than as a number or a list. A value matches when it is text, such as `"Blue T-shirt"`, `"SKU-001"`, or even blank text `""`. A number stored as a number (like `42` rather than `"42"`), a true/false value, or a list does not match. This condition has no settings: it looks at whatever value it is given and reports whether that value is text.

This documentation describes: [Schema](/schemas/condition/type-string)

## Fields

This condition has no settings of its own.

## Sample data

This checks each entity's `value` field.

| Incoming value | Result |
| ------------------------------------- | -------------- |
| `"hello"` (text) | Matches |
| `"42"` (a number written as text) | Matches |
| `"19.99"` (a decimal written as text) | Matches |
| `42` (a number) | Does not match |
| `true` (an on/off value) | Does not match |
| `null` (no value) | Does not match |
| `["a", "b", "c"]` (a list) | Does not match |

The check looks at how the value is stored, not how it reads. A number written as text such as `"42"` matches, while the same value stored as a plain number `42` does not.
