# API keys

> How to create and use API keys to access Alumio programmatically.

API Keys allow external systems and automations to authenticate against your Alumio environment via the Alumio API. Navigate to **More → Access control → API Keys**.

Each API key is tied to the user who created it. All API activity is logged under that user in the Audit trail. If the user who created a key is deleted from the environment, the key is automatically revoked. For long-lived automations, it is best practice to create keys under a dedicated user account that will not be removed.

The API Keys overview shows the key name, who created it, when it was created, and when it was last used. Keys can be deleted from the Actions menu. The "Last used" column helps identify inactive keys for cleanup.
